What is a CV ?
CV - Curriculum Vitae [kəˌrɪkjələm 'viːtaɪ] (the course of one's life)[]. It’s actually a short summary of your educational and professional history.
What shall I write?
It’s better to begin with your personal details like name, address, date of birth, telephone number and email.
Then it’s time to give info about your education and qualification. It is usually about your university, diploma and sometimes even grades. And we can go to the next step.
Work experience.
There some tiny secrets.
- Use action verbs such as developed, planned and organized, writing about your duties.
- Mention your experience of working in team, providing a quality service, and dealing tactfully with complaints. It can be even about your previous position of waiter(waitress) or barman.Try to relate the skills to the job.
- It’s better to organize your writing as a list or a kind of a table. For example, date – position – duties and skills. It’s easier to read.
And after that hard work we can go to the last but one point of the CV - Interests and achievements . But don’t think that it’s not important. In our century of corporate cultures and team-buildings, you future boss will probably give his attention to it. So,
Interests and achievements . ·
- Let it be short and well-organized.
- Don't use the old boring cliches here: "socialising with friends".
- Don't put many passive, solitary hobbies (reading, watching TV, stamp collecting).
- Show a range of interests
- Something that is a bit out of ordinary –diving, backpacking. This will show that you are able to rely on yourself in difficult situations.
- Any evidence of leadership is important to mention: captain or coach of a sports team, participation in student organizations and so on.
And we come to Skills. The usual skills are
languages (good conversational French, basic Spanish),
-computing (e.g. "good working knowledge of MS Access and Excel, plus basic web page design skills")
- driving
And the last point, which is not always obligatory - References. (It is about your former employers or even tutors.) Normally two referees are needed: one academic (perhaps your tutor) and one from an employer (perhaps your last part-time or summer job).
And the last thing about the CV, which is very obvious - the order and the emphasis will depend on what you are applying for and what you have to offer.
You will also need a Covering Letter in addition to your CV, but we will talk about it a bit later.:)
