1. A LOT OF / LOTS OF
*"A lot of" and "lots of" have the same meaning: they both mean a large amount or number of people or things.
▶EXAMPLE:
I don't have A LOT OF money. / I don't have LOTS OF money.
LOTS OF people like football / A LOT OF people like footaball.'
*They are both used before countable nouns and uncountable nouns:
▶EXAMPLE:
A lot of/lots of sand has got into my shoes. (Uncountable nouns)
I can eat a lot of/lots of grapes when I want to. (Countable nouns)
*When we use a lot of/lots of with a plural subject, we use a plural verb.
▶EXAMPLE:
A lot of/lots of REPLIES WERE received in response to her advertisement.
*When we use a lot of/lots of with a singular subject, we use a singular verb.
▶EXAMPLE: A lot of/lots of false INFORMATION WAS given to the tax authorities.
2. A LOT
A lot means very often or very much. It is used as an adverb. It often comes at the end of a sentence and never before a noun.
▶EXAMPLE:
I like basketball a lot.
She's a lot happier now than she was.
I don't go there a lot anymore.
